Queen’s Day 2008
By Branko Collin
Queen’s Day 2008: if you weren’t dressed for the occasion, there were vendors more than willing to help you remedy that. After the nation-wide flea market we went dumpster diving, and as will happen we found some of our biggest treasures then.

I live in Scotland, and have had a beautiful Dutch partner for almost 5 years, so I’m still learning about Dutch culture. My first Queen’s Day I did a bit of dumpster diving and rescued a wee stuffed cat whom I called “shampoofles”.
I had seen the word on a TV advert and asked my partner what it meant, but I pronounced it the way we do in English, (as in one shampoofle, two shampoofles). I’m sorry I had to miss Queen’s Day this year. It’s one of my favourite Dutch holidays
What a nice story! I scored a French triphop record that was brand new and some great English books.
The weather was so-so, but the rain they predicted was negligeable. I still managed to get a sunburn on my face :)
