Peewit egg hunting season is officially open

The Province of Friesland is the only place in Europe where peewit (aka lapwing) eggs can be collected on cultural-historical grounds. As of today, 1 March 2011 and until 9 April 2011, people in Friesland can go egg hunting, but have to ask permission from the provincial council by phone text message before taking each egg they find. Despite objections from bird protection groups, a total of 5,939 eggs can be collected. Twittering them would be a lot cooler, but hey.

In the province of Friesland, it is a tradition to be the first one to find the year’s first peewit egg (‘kievitsei’, in Dutch). Unlike other birds who lay their eggs in nests, the peewit (aka Northern Lapwing) lays its eggs in the ground. Friesland has tons of open fields where people go ‘egg hunting’. The finding of the first egg is a symbol of spring and is always news.

Ugly cat needs a home

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 12:19 pm

Here’s a picture of the cat
Here’s a picture its doppelgänger, Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter movies.

According to employees at the animal shelter, the cat scares people away. The poor cat has had skin cancer, and had to have its nose and ears amputated. The vet said that light skinned cats were more proned to skin cancer.

Harry Potter fans, it’s time to own the cat of your dreams! Charlie is 14 and was well taken care of before his operation as well. The woman who cared for him had to give him up because he cannot handle other cats. The employees will tell you he’s very cuddly as long as there’s no other cats around.

Charlie is pretty on the inside.

Rabbits scared away by loud music

Are bunnies ruining your local football pitch? Can’t get a permit from the city to shoot them? Scare them away with loud music!

That’s what a football club in Dronten, Flevoland is being told to resort to from the city at night to annoy the bunnies right back.

Of course, the question on everyone’s mind is: what’s the music they’re playing? And who the heck came up with this ‘solution’ over at town hall?

Hamsters were not really mistreated, says judge

Filed under: Animals,Art by Orangemaster @ 1:11 pm

Kunstenares Tinkebell (Katinka Simonse) has been found not guilty of mistreating 95 hamsters. Back in 2008 the Society for the Protection of Animals and the police raided one of her exhibitions to free dozens of hamsters. The hamsters should only have been stuck in their balls for 30 minutes (apparently recommended) and in this case were stuck in them for four hours.

Since the judge and an Artis zoo vet could not determine whether the hamsters where in danger or not, Tinkebell got a fine of 950 euro, with 450 euro as a ‘suspended fine’. The gallery owner is also in the clear.

Hibernation could save human lives

Filed under: Animals,Science by Orangemaster @ 5:57 pm

Scientists at the University of Groningen together with the city’s UMCG hospital are researching the possibilities of having patients ‘hibernate’ to suppress immune system reactions after operations, which could damage organs. In the winter and even in the summer certain types of animals hibernate to save energy and can do so without any damage to their organs. Imagine a heart transplant patient recovering nice and slowly to make sure it all goes well. OK, it sounds like an episode of House to me, too.

According to Wikipedia, “there are many research projects currently investigating how to achieve ‘induced hibernation’ in humans. The ability for humans to hibernate would be useful for a number of reasons, such as saving the lives of seriously ill or injured people by temporarily putting them in a state of hibernation until treatment can be given.

Rope to save cats from drowning in canal

Filed under: Animals,Architecture by Branko Collin @ 8:34 am

After their fifteenth cat had drowned in the Marquette Canal, the citizens of the Kersenboogerd neighbourhood in Hoorn, Noord Holland, installed a long rope along the side of the steep canal wall to prevent any more cats from drowning. The long rope should help future cats to climb out of the canal more easily, RTV Noord Holland reports in this video segment.

It is unknown why so many cats fall into canals. The Hoorn initiative follows a similar one from Leiden of a couple of years ago called Katuitdegracht.nl.

Winter hunting ban; porn and clown voices; secretary most wanted job; and more

Filed under: Animals,Automobiles,General,Sustainability,Technology by Branko Collin @ 3:20 pm

* Several provinces have instated hunting bans for a variety of animals because of the cold weather. Zeeland, Drenthe, Noord Holland and Limburg have ordered a general hunting ban, while others have limited their bans to a selection of animals. The Party for the Animals (PvdD) has called for a nationwide ban, Trouw reports.

* Car navigation software voiced by porn actress Kim Holland was the most popular of the Navigatiestemmen.nl stable in 2010, Blik op Persbericht reports. Her voice was also the most popular in 2009. The winner of 2008, Clown Bassie, came second this year. Unrelated: recently Holland’s demand that Internet provider Ziggo release the personal data of a customer suspected of infringing her copyrights was rejected on appeal.

* The most wanted job title on Monsterboard.nl in 2010 was secretary, just like last year. Visitors searched 500,000 times for the title. Manager and controller were other popular job titles, Blik op Nieuws writes.

* Almost 1 billion worth of guilder coins and bills are still hiding underneath mattresses and in other places, Z24 reports. Half of that money is in coins, and can no longer be exchanged for euro. Paper money can be exchanged at the central bank (DNB) until 2031. The amount of unclaimed banknotes seems to be the same as last year’s.

Radio station gives away chihuahua as prize

Filed under: Animals,Music,Weird by Orangemaster @ 12:13 pm

North Holland radio sation WildFM felt like giving a prize away that was not the usual fare: a chihuahua, a type of dog that became increasingly popular once American socialite Paris Hilton was seen with one. Other unusal prizes the radio station has given away in the past include a breast enlargement (how very man friendly) and a dream wedding worth 50,000 euro.

Black dog in almost every picture

Filed under: Animals,Art,Photography by Branko Collin @ 11:11 am

The photo book series In Almost Every Picture by ad agency Kessels Kramer show pictures taken by amateurs that focus on the same element again and again.

In the ninth edition, a badly lit black dog is the subject of the camera’s attention. The product site doesn’t say who the photographer is.

Holly Moors says:

The series is very funny because the dog is black and the quality of the Polaroids is low, so most of the time you just get to see a black blob. Apart from producing picture puzzles, such as this one where the dog almost disappears in the shade, the series also produces a window on a time and a family.

A perhaps more famous episode of this series is the woman at the shooting gallery. This is the sort of photography that made Hans Aarsman quit photography altogether, because he realized that as a professional he could never attain this level of authenticity.

T-rex and other tin statues in Amsterdam

Filed under: Animals,Art by Branko Collin @ 4:14 pm

When I passed the zoo in Amsterdam yesterday, I spotted these metal statues on a grassy plot near the Nijlpaarden bicycle bridge. There are a T-rex, a centaur, a woman carrying a basket on her head, a monkey and others. I don’t think this is an official display, considering the unkept area it was in, but the people of the neighbourhood seemed to enjoy the little ad hoc park.

I haven’t been able to find out who made them, so any hints are appreciated.
