Farmers to replace cows for worms

Filed under: Animals,Food & Drink by Branko Collin @ 11:47 am

If it is up to Zeeland’s bait producer Topsy Baits, farmers in the North of the country will swap their cows for worms. These worms are necessary according to Topsy Baits CEO Bert Meijering to replace the tons of fishmeal used every year to feed farmed fish. Apparently, for every kilo of farmed salmon, five kilos of wild fish have to be turned into fishmeal, and fishmeal is needed for fish to reach maturity. Meijering claims that using farmed ragworms instead can give the same result.

Meijering’s firm has built a farm in Wales which will raise 50,000 tons of ragworms each year, enough to produce 500,000 tons of fishmeal replacement once mixed with soy, wheat or peas. Currently, the firm is in talks with a farmers’ organisation in Groningen and Friesland to cooperate on his next few farms. According to Meijering, 500,000 tons equals the amount of extra fishmeal needed every year. Building ragworm farms could create between 1,000 and 1,500 jobs in the region.

Circus combats animal rights activists using elephant pee

Filed under: Animals by Branko Collin @ 3:04 pm

Animals rights activists claim they have been sprayed with elephant urine by circus employees last Saturday in Hoogeveen. The activists said that employees of Circus Renz Berlin used water pistols to shoot at them. When the police arrived at the scene everything was quiet again, although a threatening atmosphere was still lingering in the air according to an unnamed police spokesperson. The police confiscated one water gun that contained a “foul smelling substance”.

Rare black seal lands on Dutch shores

Filed under: Animals,Nature by Orangemaster @ 2:35 pm

This weekend, the seal asylum in Pieterburen found a pitch black baby seal. He could be the brother of Black Lola that washed up on shore two years ago.

The seal has been given the temporary name Black Jack, although a contest to pick a name is being held. He is the third black seal to show up in the Netherlands in 35 years. They say he is black due to melanism, an increased amount of black or nearly black pigmentation, and the opposite of albinism. Black Jack will hopefully be strong enough to go back into the sea in three months’ time.

Any link you click in this article has nice pics! Funny how the name has to have black in it.

Duck, duck, goose head

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 1:56 pm

I used to translate stuff about Belgians throwing cats from belfries and swallowing live goldfish during century-old ceremonies and other mischief, but the Dutch in Limburg also have something albeit less way traumatising they don’t want to give up so easily. Then again, the media often reports that the Party for the Animals (PvdD) submits like 200 motions a day to Parliament, so no surprise that this becomes news.

Ganstrekken, the practice of pulling the head off a dead goose during Carnival celebrations in the Limburg village of Grevenbicht (just 2,500 inhabitants), is not decent behaviour but will not be banned, farm minister Gerda Verburg told MPs yesterday. Granting a licence for the tradition is up to the local council, Verburg said.

They used to do it to a live goose (eeeuuuw). Use a doll like they do in Ypres, Belgium with the cat, come up with something new, so many alternatives, think outside the box that is your head.

Giant cat still stuck in cage

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 10:16 am

Not only is the poor big cat Shin-Chan still caged up at Schiphol Airport (but not in this picture) since the end of January and not only did celeb lawyer Bram Moszkowicz not manage to free the cat, but the owners could be sued for “illegallly importing a wild animal”. The bottom line for the cat is being killed or shoved in a zoo, a very bright future indeed.

Since the Dutch love to put a price tag on everything, let me see… about EUR 20,000 for the cat (some sources say 19,000 others 22,000), probably close to that in lawyer fees and then there’s the very real defence attorney fees and a possible fine.

Find out what we wrote in January about the poor giant cat.

Yuppies kill horses rather than send them to the butcher

Singer Henk Westbroek praised the sausages of Wim van Beek in his column in De Pers yesterday. Van Beek was one of the last horse butchers of the Netherlands, and died last year. After a hiatus of three months, his son ewopened the business, and the man who is one of the founders of the 1980s Nederpop movement thinks the son’s sausages are as good as those of the father.

But there is a problem. According to Westbroek, the butcher only has a limited supply of horses. He only buys horses that are two year olds or younger, which usually are hobby horses with which the owner got bored. Nowadays, owners think it is “sad” that horses are killed for their meat, so they have the horses put to sleep (and presumably have the horses buried). And so the famous sausages of Van Beek in Utrecht are never on sale for long.

Update 12-3: the text of the column is now available in Dutch on Westbroek’s site.

Dead deer eaten by prey YouTube hit

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 7:00 am

From the beautiful, rich yet small village of Ooij East of the Netherlands comes a website where you can watch how a deer gets eaten by other animals. Follow this link for at least 10 films.

In the first week of its existence, the www.dooddoetleven.nl website (roughly, ‘death comes alive’) was visited about 200,000 times. Watch 24oranges help with those figures! The films show buzzards, crows and magpies picking away at a dead deer. YouTubecurrently has these films in its Top 10.

De Kleine Hans (The small Hans) is a brand new photography prize and this time around, the winner is a cat. The award, also referred to as “the world’s biggest small photography prize,” was awarded this week to Mr. Lee, a male cat owned by Juergen Perthold, a German man living in the US. Juergen built a camera that he attached to Mr. Lee’s collar, which takes a picture every minute. The result of many wanderings can be seen on the site.

Fined for not driving over a cat

Filed under: Animals,Weird by Orangemaster @ 6:02 pm

A driver in Schiedam was fined EUR 75 for not driving over a cat, or basically, ignoring a green light. The man was trying to avoid running over the cat by waiting until it got out of the way.

“If I had hit the gas, I would have killed the cat and gotten a fine for ‘destruction of property’. So I waited and because I did, I got a fine for ignoring a green light.” The driver says he’s usually calm, but this got him pissed off. “I wrote to the the mayor and told her that her fining policy makes me sick and then I wrote to every member of parliament.”

Giant cat story not over yet

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 10:50 am

Poor big cat Shin-Chan has been caged up at Schiphol Airport (but not in this picture) for almost two weeks now, as customs is not sure it should be allowed into the Netherlands. Inspectors want to know if the giant cat, a cross between an Asian leopard cat and a African serval with some house cat mix, is kosher (figuratively speaking). The owners of the cat have decided to hire celeb lawyer Bram Moszkowicz who should get things moving. Having paid a whopping EUR 19,000 for their cat, they want to enjoy it.

And then there’s stuff on the net that points to a scam.
