Polish fish for profit, not fun

Ever since the Poles have been coming en masse to the Netherlands to apparently do jobs that the Dutch can’t be bothered with, there’s been some talk of trying to get them to accept the ways of the Dutch. In other words, those of the Dutch government, to ‘integrate’ them, although as EU citizens, they do not have to. Basically, the media tends to portray the Poles as ‘being in Rome, but not doing as the Romans do’ and that tends to irritate the Dutch quite a bit.

Apparently, the Poles like to fish in their spare time, but according to Sportvisserij Nederland (the fishing authorities), which hand out permits, they are over-fishing and not following the rules. The situation is so bad that a Polish translation of the fishing rules is being handed to them.

What’s the problem? Dutch fishers put back the fish they caught, while the Poles catch them and either eat them or sell them. It almost sounds like the Dutch expected them to do the same without explaining it to them first. On the other hand, obviously some Poles who may have learned about the rules chose to ignore them for the media to pick this up. This is what we call a ‘cultural difference’, kids.

“The Poles have different ethics and a different food culture and don’t follow the rules,” according to spokesman Juul Steyn from Sportvisserij Nederland.

Happy World Animal Day! Have some space cake

Filed under: Animals,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:56 am

In good Dutch finger pointing tradition, Stichting Wakker Dier warns us about eating non-politically correct space cake with eggs from laying battery chickens. To point the space cake eating crowd in the right direction, they have come up with a sticker to place on “chicken friendly” space cake, made with deep litter eggs (from chickens that do get to run around somewhat).

The coffee shops, Dutch for those places that sell weed and hash, are quite happy to oblige them.

Reality show going to the dogs

Totally fed up of seeing famous Dutch people (who nobody knows outside the country) ballroom dance, teenagers singing in English in the hopes of becoming American singers (they know what their chances are if they sing in Dutch) or cameras following backpackers in China trying to hitch a ride with no money? There’s something new coming up: Holland’s Next Dog Model. Look, the name is in English – again.

People are passé, dogs are the new people. The only creatures cuter are babies (debatable), and that would surely open a legal can of worms.

Gilze-Rijen, Noord-Brabant has a Dutch first in their midst: the first dog resort of Europe. Owners can leave they holiday guilt at the door instead of their family pet, according to Dutch paper De Telegraaf. The dogs get their own room and much space, and can use the pool and the doggy park.

Hotel owner Ad van der Valk (our Dutch Hilton man) took this initiative together with a group of entrepreneurs who experience this guilt with their furry friends. The luxury dog resort represents an investment of about EUR 3,5 million.

Bird friendly lighting at sea

Filed under: Animals,Dutch first by Orangemaster @ 12:12 pm

The Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) and Philips have recently developed a new type of lighting for oil and gas platforms that is ‘bird friendly’. The lights give off a limited part of the colour spectrum, which distract birds less when they fly over the North Sea, making their journey much safer. A platform of the NAM, just off the Dutch coast at the height of the island of Vlieland, is currently testing the new lighting. The primary results are apparently very positive, according to NAM and Philips.

Remember, this is a country that builds bridges for frogs and wildlife.

Ostriches born without using an incubator

For the first time in the Netherlands, ostriches have been born without the help of an incubator, according to ostrich breeder Monnikenwerve from Sluis, Zeeland. The hatching of the eggs was a real team effort, as besides mother Fatima and father Zorro, two other ostriches took turns sitting on the eggs. Last Friday two eggs out of ten were hatched, with the rest expected to hatch any day now. The two chicks now weigh about a kilo, but in a year they will weigh about 100 kilos. The ostrich is the heaviest and biggest bird in the world, and it cannot fly. They are also very tasty with a port sauce.

Man ‘rapes’ sheep, but did the sheep suffer?

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 1:51 pm

In the fields of Haaksbergen, Overijssel the police arrested a man ‘raping’ a sheep because the sheep’s owner, who must have seen it happen, filed a complaint. Sex with animals in the Netherlands is only punishable by law if there is proof the animal suffered and the police need to investigate the matter further.

So if the police conclude the animal did not suffer, it can’t be called rape. But what was it? It surely wasn’t consentual. What about ‘abusing’ someone else’s property? Yes, animals are property here last time I checked. Any thoughts, people?

This is not the first time that sex with animals has made it on 24 oranges. The law hasn’t changed since the last time we posted about it.

Wild pig season opens in Epe

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 11:16 am
sangliers1.jpg

Today the town of Epe, Gelderland has declared open hunting season on wild pigs. Apparently, the boars cause problems inside and outside of town, wrecking gardens and wandering downtown at night, catching drivers off guard. Solution? Shoot them on the edge of town, because they will reproduce. When they make it in town, they will be shot at with a gun used for fireworks. Thursday the real shooting will get underway by people hired to do so.

Is it just me or will local restaurants with culinary insight want to get in on this?

Dutch agency produces SUV advert with electrocuted dog

Filed under: Animals,Automobiles by Orangemaster @ 12:26 pm

Chrysler Group apologized for an advertisement that showed a dog being electrocuted beside its new Dodge Nitro sports utility vehicle. Dutch advertising agency BBDO Netherlands produced an advert in which a dog is electrocuted after urinating on a Nitro’s wheels. The advert, which ends with the dog going up in flames, has the tagline “charged with adrenaline”. According to Chrysler, the advert was placed exclusively on the Internet. The company said the advert included “fictional yet inappropriate treatment of an animal” and said it was “in extremely bad taste.” So is the car design-wise, according to many car blogs.

By now, it it said to have been removed from YouTube, but I’m sure it’s floating around somewhere, virally. If anyone has a link, please post.

Update: And here we are. Thanks, Adamus!

The Dutch union of poultry farmers (the NVP) wants to offer self-defense courses to its members as a response to the animal rights activitists’ training camp in Appelscha, Friesland. These animal rights activitists hold workhops in things such as how to arm themselves against police and the authorities. The NVP does not understand why these people are allowed to practice this activity in the Netherlands at all.
