Lucky winner spends night in Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam had a contest going where a lucky winner could spend a night at the museum in front of Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ or as it is really called, ‘Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq’.

Teacher and artist Stefan Kasper, 33, from Haarlem was visiting the Rijksmuseum with his class of elementary students and turned out to be the museum’s ten millionth visitor since they reopened in 2013. He was escorted to a gallery where he was greeted with trumpet sounds and some 200 employees of the museum when he was given the great news.

Kasper noticed the sign at the entrance about the contest, but didn’t pay much attention to it. He spent a “fantastic” night at the museum in what seems to be a comfortable spot right in front of the world-famous painting.

And instead of just falling asleep he decided to enjoy this “moment of euphoria that nobody else will get to have” by sleeping two hours and then walking around the museum in his socks. The silence in the museum was very enjoyable, Kasper explains. “This is history”, he said.

Over the last year, Dutch artist Jeroen van Kesteren has been toiling away at these sculptural airships as part of a series entitled ‘Orphanage for Lost Adventures’. Made primarily from cardboard, aluminum foil, adhesives, and an assortment of papers used for sails and propellers, the whimsical flying machines have a distinct steampunk feel. The pieces range from 40 to 50 centimetres tall and take about a month to make. Jeroen shares additional images of the airships and several additional sculptures on Pinterest.

Dutch drugstore peddles colouring book with Hitler

Filed under: Art,History,Weird by Orangemaster @ 8:21 pm

Ah yes, it’s truly springtime for Hitler.

A colouring book from Dutch drugstore chain Kruidvat, handed out with a specific condom brand, contains an image of Hitler making a Nazi salute and wearing a Swastika armband, in what has to be one of the oddest sentences I’ve written in a while, with the exception of the title of this posting.

The story started making the rounds after it hit Dutch social media and was quickly removed after being on sale for half a day by the chain, followed by some apologising and refunds. The colouring book also includes other historical figures such as Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln.

Why a condom manufacturer is handing out colouring book is beyond me. The book was printed in India, which incidentally is where the original symbol of the Swastika comes from, but how that connects in any way, shape or form to a dictator in a colouring book offered by a condom company remains a mystery.

British film about Amsterdam films in Leiden

Filed under: Art,Film by Orangemaster @ 10:26 pm

Many people thought British actor Emma Watson would be in the Netherlands to film ‘The Miniaturist’, based on a book by Jessie Burton. The story is set in Amsterdam in 1686-1687, inspired by Petronella Oortman’s doll’s house on display at the Rijksmuseum. The more precise setting of the story is on the ‘Golden Bend’, what used to be the richest part of Amsterdam, depicted here around 1672 in a painting by Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde. Read up on the painting, it has quite a story to tell.

The funny thing is the few days of filming that took place in the Netherlands were done in Leiden, 45 kilometres down the road, and not in Amsterdam, which for anyone living in the capital is a bit odd. As far as the rest of the movie goes, it was mostly filmed in a studio in the United Kingdom.

According to the city of Leiden, Emma Watson was also in Leiden for the film, but production company Topkapi Films says that’s not the case, although the Dutch media still went with spreading rumours.

Dutch radio station 538 is asking their listeners to vote on the ‘Ugliest artwork of the Netherlands’. The nine nominees include a ‘pooping skater’ in Pijnacker, the awkward arch in Amstelveen and something I actually like, the ‘Big Funnelman’ (their spelling, not mine) in Breda.

World-famous Dutch tattoo artist Hanky Panky (Henk Schiffmacher), who by the way is celebrating his 65th birthday and 40 years of tattooing at pop temple Paradiso in Amsterdam later this month, will be drawing the design on the Dutch championship (aka ‘Eredivisie’) football.

The football he will design is for the 2017-2018 Dutch championship season, done specially for the 60th anniversary of the Eredivisie and should represent Dutch culture.

According to Wikipedia, Hanky Panky is an expert in the field of body art, having curated exhibitions, written books, and presented TV shows on the subject. And he’s given tattoos to the likes of Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kurt Cobain (RIP) of Nirvana frontman and Lemmy (RIP) of Motörhead.

Charity shop may have scored a Mondriaan painting

Filed under: Art by Orangemaster @ 10:56 am

A charity shop in Naarden may have actually scored an authentic painting by Piet Mondriaan, which could be worth thousands of euro.

Right after laying eyes on it, the employee of the shop thought it could be real and placed it in a special ‘treasure’ room for safe keeping. He called up a Dutch auctioneer who confirmed that it could indeed be the real deal.

According to the auctioneer, it looks like other works Mondriaan produced around 1900, but of course, its authenticity will need to be verified and that normally takes quite some time.

If the charity shop were to make money off selling the painting, they could hire more people who need jobs and have difficulties finding one, which is their purpose. The painting is currently worth 100 to 200 euro, but they say it would be nice if they could sell it for 10,000 euro.

Buildings in The Hague get a Mondriaan makeover

Filed under: Art by Orangemaster @ 9:21 pm

Mondriaan

For the centennial of Dutch art movement De Stijl of which Piet Mondriaan (or Mondrian) was a member of, the city of The Hague has had city hall done up as a Mondriaan painting, with characteristic blue, red and yellow squares and bold black lines.

The project was made using large, adhesive, monochrome rectangles, applied one by one by Rotterdam-based design firm Studio Vollaerszwart, making the building look like a De Stijl-type artwork. Other buildings in The Hague will follow suit, include pontoons in the Hofvijver, a pond in the city the centre, and the Mauritshuis museum.

Geert Mul retrospective at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, from Commodore Amiga art to giant lenticular prints

Filed under: Art by Branko Collin @ 3:20 pm

geert-mul-natureally-2015

Video and visual artist Geert Mul is showing 25 years of his work at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

The work runs a wide gamut of early multimedia computer art, such as his Then and Now created in the BASIC programming language on the Commodore Amiga (see this video at 1:19), to 2015’s Natureally (illustration), which shows a transparent photo of a tree illuminated from behind in ever changing colours.

Trendbeheer visited the show and came away pleasantly overwhelmed:

Mul’s oeuvre is rich and the selection for the exhibition is eclectic. The rooms are full with works from different time periods. […] The sounds sometimes bleed into each other, on purpose. […]

What is pleasant about Mul’s work is that there is room for the audience, both because some works require physical interaction and because there is a lot of room for interpretation.

The problem with writing about interactive and video art is of course that these are works that need to be experienced, so even if you do not have the time to visit the exhibition, which runs until 12 February 2017, be sure to visit the links to the videos and to Mul’s website.

Mass mating dance in Utrecht for Valentine’s Day

Filed under: Animals,Art by Orangemaster @ 1:26 pm

Contemporary British artist Marcus Coates from London is asking single men to go to Utrecht Central Station at 4 pm on 14 February, which is next to city hall, to perform a mating dance. On a Tuesday when everyone works and goes to school.

Coates is planning to organise a makeshift dating show with the men doing the mating dance of the Eurasian woodcock, which involves running a certain route around the Netherlands’ biggest train station.

In the mean time, single women will be waiting at city hall to pick out a man by calling out to them, just in time to correspond with the mating season of the Eurasian woodcock.

Let’s unpack this, shall we? The first thing that came to mind is also the first comment I read: it’s heterosexist. Yeah, it’s about the birds and all, but still. And who’s paying for this? Won’t it be really busy at rush hour? And is this being done in the Netherlands so Coates gets a free trip over? Too many questions and not many answers in sight.
