Weird and banned Dutch names

Filed under: General,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:27 pm

Many Dutch names sound or look odd to people who can’t read the names in Dutch or have never heard them before like Joke (usually for girls), Freek (usually for boys) and Puk (unisex), but they are are quite normal.

However, some of the names that have been banned in the Netherlands since 1970 when the weed wore off when French law implemented by Napoleon in 1811 was applied, meant children had ancient names or names from the Holy Calendar.

Odd names:
– Dienaar van God (‘Servant of God’), banned in 2013.
– Jeanne d’Arc (banned in 1945 and again in 2009, but approved by an Amsterdam Court in 2010)
– TomTom (presented in Venray in 1999, but approved later on)
Geisha (presented in Groningen around 1985, but approved in 1990)
– Miracle of Love (approved Amsterdam 30 juni 1998, became Miracle-of-love)

Names that bureaucrats eventually accepted:

– Fleur de Mariage (French for ‘Flower of Marriage)
– Urine (as a female form of Uranus)

Names that were banned before 1970:
– Denis, became Dennis
– Pascale, the female version of Pascal, was eventually accepted.
– Other ‘normal’ sounding names like ‘Kitty’, ‘Willy’, ‘Loraine’, ‘Joey’ and ‘Savanna’
– A whole bunch of Dutch surnames that cannot be used as a first name

Dutch farmers seek match for their farms

Filed under: Animals,General by Orangemaster @ 9:21 pm

According to Statistics Netherlands, some 60 percent of farmers aged over 55 in the Netherlands don’t have anybody to leave their land to when they retire. They say 15,000 farms could disappear over the next decade, with more than eight out of 10 sheep farmers, and with pig and cow farmers only doing slightly better.

Now there’s a service called ‘Farmer Seeks Farmer’ that matches up people looking for a farm with those who will soon want to get rid of theirs. Backed by the Young Farmers’ Association, pig farmer Sander Thus has help set up the online scheme putting farmers close to retirement age in contact with young wannabe farmers.

Since the scheme was launched in 2011, several dozen farms have moved outside of the original family owners to be taken over by a new generation of farmers. And Thus hopes the numbers will grow, with 135 people searching for land registered on the site, and some 35 existing farmers looking for new blood to farm their lands. “Today, most of the people looking to take over a farm are self-employed between 20 and 40 who don’t come from the farming world, but want to roll their sleeves up,” he explains.

Inflatable flamingo hinders holiday floating session

Filed under: General,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:30 pm

Screen Shot 2017-07-31 at 21.10.15

A couple on vacation on Mallorca decided to blow up their inflatable flamingo they had bought at the toy shop before leaving. They jokingly posted on social media that the flamingo has an abnormality, but that they are open minded and accept him the way he is. The flamingo’s neck is the other way around, which means it’s not very comfortable to float around in as it pokes you.

They wrote a letter to the shop they bought it from to ask them jokingly what went wrong during the flamingo’s gestation. As of this morning, their post was viewed over 22,000 times and someone even offered them 50 euro for the abnormal inflatable flamingo.

The shop jokingly wrote back that in a sea of pink flamingoes, they would know exactly which one was theirs, a bit like having an odd car in a huge car park, and that they could also come by and trade it in.

Russian submarine in Amsterdam has to go

Filed under: General,History by Orangemaster @ 12:21 pm

B-80

Even back in 2008 the Russian Foxtrot B-80 submarine that watches over Amsterdam North’s NDSM harbour was scheduled to be removed, but that never happened. The 90-meter-long submarine built in Riga in 1956 and brought to Amsterdam from Den Helder in 2002 for 56,000 euro by a local architect has been in the harbour since and now belongs to a Belgian company that has been served an ‘enforcement action’ to remove it.

Today, the submarine is considered to be a real risk because it is in poor condition. They were big plans for the B-80, from being a place for fashion shows, being turned into a presentation space and even becoming part of a ship museum, all ideas that fell in the water.

In 2009 the submarine was owned by a Turkish firm that wanted to tow it away in order to have it destroyed, but they were asked by the Dutch government to pay a hefty ‘deposit’ to guarantee that everything would go according to European regulations. The Turks didn’t want to pay the amount, something the Belgians tried to appeal in court as well, but lost. Now the Belgians have to tow it away, but we wonder how this is all going to be enforced.

And yes, the B-80 is a cool thing to look when you take the free ferry from Amsterdam Central Station and arrive 10 minutes later at the NDSM harbour.

Second biggest yacht in the world sails by

Filed under: Dutch first,General by Orangemaster @ 10:12 pm

Yacht

Off the coast of the Netherlands near Wijk aan Zee, North Holland someone has apparently spotted and filmed Dutch-built yacht Oceanco Y712, the second biggest sailing yacht ever-built in the world, which looks like a modern-day pirate ship when its sails are out. Someone also took a video of its maiden voyage last February in Hoek van Holland, South Holland, which has that pirate feel as well, thanks to the weather.

The Y712 is 106 metres long (or 105 metres depending on sources), and earlier this year was the biggest yacht ever built until it was surpassed by the Jubilee Y714, which looks very different and is 110 metres long, making it the biggest yacht ever built in the world.

The rumours were that someone super rich was taking the Y712 out for a spin, but nobody knows who that was. I can tell you that Oceanco’s website is in English and in Russian, which gives you an idea of their clientele.

UPDATE: Now called the Black Pearl, the yacht belongs to a Russian man.

Filed under: General,History by Orangemaster @ 5:00 pm

Tunku

Model and former semi-professional footballer Dennis Verbaas, 28, from Lisse, South Holland, now known as Dennis Muhammad Abdullah after converting to Islam two years ago, is set to marry Princess Tunku Aminah, 31, the only daughter of Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, Malaysia, a state that borders on Singapore.

The second of three children, Dennis wanted to play professional football, but had heart issues. His sister signed him up to a modelling agency, which kicked off his career. Verbaas travelled around the world for work and probably came into contact with royalty in Johor while doing so.

The pair will be married on 14 August in a ceremonial process that will start on 8 August with all the traditional obligations, including a ‘royal bath’ in the botanical gardens of the Sultan.

World’s biggest mobile swing ride in Uden

Filed under: Dutch first,General by Orangemaster @ 8:56 pm

oktoberfest1.JPG

The city of Uden, Noord-Brabant is currently featuring the biggest mobile chair swing ride in the world. It stands at 80 metres and can go up to 70 kilometres an hour. Specification wise, it is identical to the Star Flyer at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, although that swing ride is a fixed one.

The biggest fixed swing chair ride in the world can be found at Six Flags Over Texas in the United States, and its called Sky Screamer. It has a height of 121 metres and reaches speeds of 56 kilometers an hour, which makes sense given the sheer size of the ride (POV video).

Bike path under Rijksmuseum is making millions

Filed under: Bicycles,General by Orangemaster @ 10:06 am

The bike path under Amsterdam’s world famous Rijksmuseum has turned into a veritable cash cow for the city. Although it is illegal for scooters and mopeds to use this bike path, between November 2014 and January 2017 no less than 27,000 fines of 90 euro were issued to these tenacious road users caught on camera, amounting to a staggering 2.4 million euro in fines.

The city has even put more obvious signs, but it’s not working. A few days ago, local TV station AT5 stood outside there for an hour and a half and saw four scooters get fined at what is now 95 euro a pop.

What’s the big deal? Well, even back in 2003 when the bike path was being renovated, there were discussions about making it off limits to cyclists, but the museum was quickly struck down on that point. The path had been open to cyclists for ages, so that wasn’t going to fly. However, making it illegal for scooters and mopeds was acceptable, but obviously not everyone thinks it applies to them.

Here’s our previous story about it: bike path under Rijksmuseum and read its entire glorious history from Bicycle Dutch.

‘Here’s the money for it, but you can’t build it’

Filed under: General,Weird by Orangemaster @ 10:52 am

The city of Emmen, Drenthe has been known to be innovative with bikes and people gladly visit the eastern city for its main attraction, their zoo.

However, months ago the city approved a subsidy for the construction of a bandstand, but tragically enough the city also denied the permit for building it, even after having agreed to the actual design of the bandstand. Thankfully, after publishing this absurdity in the local press, city council said they would have a look at the situation. Comments on this so far are ‘?’ and ‘this can’t be for real’.

Just around the corner from 24HQ in Amsterdam, a kiosk was going to appear where there had never been one before in recent times, but the same situation occurred: the business got the permit to operate but not to build, and a bit further down the road another kioske got the permit to build but not to operate.

It all sounds very Soviet-era to me, minus the bribes.

Belgians overrun small Dutch town for medication

Filed under: General,Health by Orangemaster @ 9:21 pm

Hulst, a village in the east of Zeelandic Flanders, commonly referred to as “the most Flemish city in the country”, is being invaded today by protesting Belgians from Antwerp who are upset at being overcharged for medication.

A Flemish doctor who mainly has poorer clients bussed some 400 Belgians to buy drugs such as tamsulosin and omeprazole. And the pharmacies in Hulst is used to these ‘tourists’, having hired extra personnel to deal with the Belgian visit, but also criticising the Belgian government for serving its people poorly.

To give you an idea, a packet of paracetamol is 6 euro (!) in Belgium and about a euro in the Netherlands. Then there’s antipsychotic drugs that cost 152 euro (!) in Belgium, while they cost 11 euro in the Netherlands. That’s insane.

Why are the prices so different? While the Dutch pay about 100 euro a month for basic health insurance (part of which is paid for by the government for poorer people), the Belgians pay 90 a year and get nailed when they have to buy medicine. Ineffective lobbying on the part of the Belgian government when it comes to bargaining with pharmaceutical companies is very much to blame as well.

Why did the Belgians visit this week? Because the Belgian government increase the statutory personal contribution on May 1.
