Concert hall advertises by using its acoustics in amusing ways

Filed under: Architecture,Music,Science by Orangemaster @ 12:35 pm

To prove that ‘everything sounds better in the Concertgebouw’, Amsterdam’s beautiful 125-year-old concert hall, some amusing adverts were made, albeit not every one of them brilliant or believable. I find the showering one a bit boring, and I don’t need to hear burping children either.

In the video below, the acoustics were tested using three scooters, which sounded much less annoying than they do on the street whizzing by on bike paths. The three scooter guys are pretty typical for Amsterdam’s streets, and they had never been in the Concertgebouw before. Having attended concerts there myself, all I can say is that the hall is very live sounding and makes brass and strings sound very vibrant, as long as you have good seats.

Quaint tourist town of Volendam full of hard drug users

Filed under: Health,Music by Orangemaster @ 6:52 pm

According to Dutch television show ‘Spuiten en Slikken’, which talks candidly about drugs with young adults, the picturesque fishing village of Volendam uses more drugs per capita than cities like Milan, Paris and London. The sewer water, which was tested by the KWR Watercycle Research Institute, came up with the equivalent of one line of cocaine per 40 inhabitants. With XTC, Volendam takes the No. 3 spot in Europe, just behind the cities of Amsterdam and Eindhoven.

In July we already told you that Amsterdam had sewers full of hard drugs, but Volendam only has 22,000 inhabitants, although it attracts a lot of weekend drug users. Volendam is not as much the butt of jokes as the town of Urk, where kids drink and snort their religion-induced boredom away, but is home to many Dutch music artists that people either love or find annoying, making this discovery an excuse to make fun of Volendam.

Soft porn actress Sylvia Kristel dies at 60

Filed under: Film,Music by Orangemaster @ 8:07 pm

Some of you may not have heard of 1974 French soft porn film Emmanuelle, which was a worldwide hit with both men and women, and paved the way for a series of seven similar films.

The lead actress who played in four of the seven film as Emmanuelle was none other than Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel who sadly passed away today at age 60 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

A few years back she recorded a Dutch version of Serge Gainsbourg’s ‘Dieu est un fumeur de havanes’ (‘God smokes Havana cigars’) for the blog fillessourires.com.

Urinals designed by Dutch artist removed in Australia

Some Australians were so pissed at a urinal design by Dutch artist Meike van Schijndel that they have been removed just three weeks after an establishment opened.

A trendy restaurant in Sydney had to remove the urinals shaped like the Rolling Stones’ logo because they were considered offensive to many patrons of the Ananas Bar and Brasserie. Unfortunately, many people feel that these lips are female and have been offended by the idea of peeing into a woman’s mouth.

The urinals are a commonly used European design piece from female Dutch artist Meike van Schijndel. Our female designer saw one in a shopfront in Paris when she was there on an inspiration trip for Ananas and felt it referenced the Rolling Stones logo which is based on Mick Jagger’s lips rather than a woman’s lips. She felt it would be a great way to bring a slice of Paris’s risqué nightlife to Sydney. We acknowledge that other people have interpreted it differently and have therefore removed them.

It’s one thing to mistake the Rolling Stones logo for women’s lips (and certainly a good argument), but to wash your hands in a urinal at a festival is just wrong yet funny. Watch Man mistakes urinal for sink.

Lady Gaga gets Dutch shoes for perfume campaign

Filed under: Fashion,Music by Orangemaster @ 3:16 pm

For Lady Gaga’s perfume launch ‘Fame’, Dutch shoe designers United Nude created a special shoe (not the one shown), inspired by the advertising campaign where the pop diva is featured as a naked colossus with an army of tiny, naked gold men figurines climbing her body.

Creative Director of United Nude Rem D. Koolhaas, (not to be confused with Rem Koolhaas, his cousin and internationally renown architect), said that “the shoes had to be as high as possible (30 cm). We went for climbing gold men, and yes they are nude, United Nude.”

Lady Gaga performed yesterday and is performing again today in Amsterdam at the Ziggodome.

Dutchman selected to sing at Elvis’ Graceland memorial

Filed under: Dutch first,Music by Orangemaster @ 10:33 am

Singer Bouke Scholten from Emmen, by no means an Elvis impersonator, was hand picked to sing at Elvis Presley’s memorial marking the 35th anniversary of the singer’s death last Thursday, August 16.

Although the Dutch media focused on having a Dutchman sing at the memorial, a rare privilege, his performance was overshadowed by ex-wife Priscilla and daughter Lisa Marie making a surprise appearance together for the first time at a memorial since they started holding them in 1980.

The unknown Scholten had two songs to convince some 800 fans from around the world, and he succeeded in his own way, with his second number, Suspicious Minds.

Tom America turns interview fragments into songs

Filed under: Art,Literature,Music by Branko Collin @ 10:02 am

Presenter Frénk van der Linden of the arts and culture radio show Kunststof asked composer Tom America to do ‘something’ with the past 2,000 episodes, and the result was a CD full of songs that revolve around short phrases uttered by the interviewed.

The CD was released sometime in May, and is available for free from the broadcaster’s website.

Tom America was one of the driving forces between the absurdist band MAM, which performed in pyjamas and sung songs about cheese inspired by Picasso.

DJ Tiësto still on top, money-wise

Filed under: Music by Orangemaster @ 12:42 pm

According to Forbes.com, Dutch DJ Tiësto (aka Tijs Verwest, if you knew him from his home town of Breda), is the world’s best paid DJ at 22 million USD. The number 9 spot is taken up by another Dutchman, DJ Afrojack, with a mere 9 million USD. He’s the one that apparently ‘taught’ Paris Hilton how to DJ, but then that happens when you date a DJ like him.

And surprise surprise, there are no women on the list.

And to rub that fact in, a reality talent show entitled Beauty and the Beat wants to teach poor women DJs the ropes in just one style of music, house, some time next February. Imagine having real talent and showing the world you can crank out DJs like Afrojack can teach Paris Hilton. The promotional video asks, “Do you have the looks, the skills and the drive?” in that order. It all sounds so condescending, so we’ll keep you updated.

Major band write song via Twitter (#doemaarmee)

Filed under: Music by Branko Collin @ 10:24 am

Influential Dutch band Doe Maar are holding a competition in which anyone over eighteen can help write their next song.

Over the next eight weeks, each week the band will indicate which two lines of the song they need written, and entries are accepted when they are posted on Twitter using the hashtag #doemaarmee. The prizes are little more than what you would expect for co-writing a hit—royalties and free tickets—but I am guessing that most people will enter in the hope of being a part of the Doe Maar legend.

Doe Maar are a big thing in the Netherlands. They are to Nederpop what the Beatles are to Britpop, and what Kraftwerk are to techno. (The fact that they played ska and wrote open, honest lyrics was not part of that influence. The fact that they made quality songs in a modern genre in Dutch was.)

They had a short but bright career in the early eighties, reviving the pop song in the Dutch language single-handedly, scoring hit after hit and drawing halls full of teenage girls. The pressures of fame—seeing scores of young women faint in front of you night after night is apparently the opposite of ointment for the soul—led to a break-up of the band. They have been recording and performing together on and off since.

The competition started this week, and Doe Maar are currently looking for two lines that start with “Op een dag komt de dag (dat)” (one day will come the day (that)).

Cellist thrown out of train because of cello

Filed under: General,Music by Orangemaster @ 10:17 am

Young Frisian cellist Dana de Vries who studies at a conservatory in Paris was kicked off the train in Groningen a few days ago because she didn’t buy an extra ticket for her cello. The female train attendant, the media specifies, said that the cello was too big and was not hand luggage, which is complete nonsense according to her employer’s house rules. She’s being travelling to Paris for years and this is the first time this has happened.

Dutch railways apologised for the incident, letting the cellist and her cello ride first class for one day.

The part I dislike is Dutch railways calling this a ‘misunderstanding’. A misunderstanding is when someone doesn’t understand someone else or when there’s a disagreement. Neither applies here, as the cellist didn’t misunderstand anything. The term ‘misunderstanding’ is far too often used to spread blame between two parties so that the one that screws up doesn’t feel as bad about doing so. Sometimes, you’re 100% wrong and need to say sorry like an adult, which I am glad Dutch railways did.

And if you though her cello is big, imagine if she was a double bass player.
