Crisis TV: fire your co-worker

Filed under: Shows by Branko Collin @ 1:13 pm

At the MIP fair in Cannes last week Dutch TV producer Endemol presented a TV format that pits co-workers against each other as they get to vote one another off a company’s payroll. This is about real companies, not just ones made up for the show, and real people with real jobs that feed children. The working title is Someone’s Gotta Go says Worldscreen.com, which adds that the producer has already sold the format to broadcaster Fox in the USA.

In Algemeen Dagblad (Dutch) Endemol’s Paul Römer explains that the programme will follow a mid-sized company that has been hit hard by the economic crisis. People will have to be fired there.

“We start by showing everybody’s salaries. After that we show which employees are valuable to the company. And who’s shirking their responsibilities. Who deserves a raise? Who deserves lower wages? And ultimately the employees must answer the question: who must be fired?”

Römer expects the show would also work in the Netherlands. His lawyers are undoubtedly busy trying to find out how to not run afoul of the Dutch worker protection laws.

Endemol is the firm of John de Mol, brother of Linda and father of Johnny, and is responsible for introducing the world to such upstanding TV programmes as Big Brother and Give the Whore a Chance. No, wait, I forgot, that last one was a parody by Mugmetdegoudentand. No, wait again, three years after the parody was broadcast, and the underlying concept widely rejected as too unrealistic, John de Mol did indeed make a reality show with prostitutes. Because that’s the kind of classy guy he is.

Keukenhof flower exhibition turns 60

Filed under: Art,Nature,Shows by Branko Collin @ 11:07 am

The Keukenhof flower exhibition, what Wikipedia calls “the world’s largest flower garden,” turns 60 this year. Last Wednesday Queen Beatrix opened this sixtieth edition, according to Blik op Nieuws (Dutch), which is themed ‘USA, New Amsterdam – New York, 400’ in honour of the claiming of the region by Henry Hudson in 1609, followed 15 years later by the foundation of New Amsterdam, which is now called New York.

Part of the exhibition is a giant flowerbed depicting the Statue of Liberty, which is not in bloom yet.

Limburg carnival protest song written by policitians

Filed under: Music,Shows,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:27 am

The Socialist Party (SP) in the southernmost province of Limburg have written a carnival song protesting against the upcoming sale of the province’s share of utility Essent to the Germans. It is called ‘Zoëlang um maar get te zoepe haet’, which is in Limburgs dialect and probably means ‘As long as you havehe has enough to drink’. This is co-blogger Branko’s mother tongue and he speaks the Venlo variant. You may notice the softer sound of the gutteral ‘g’, which is the dead giveaway.

Carnival is just a few days away (22- 24 February) and what better way to express your anger than to get everybody drunk and singing along, protesting against losing more local clout during a recession. You may notice German is also being sung in the video, making it a multicultural all-arounder.

I can’t help but point out that many people in the northern part of the country (there’s this invisible line somewhere near a river or two) don’t celebrate carnival at all, which is seen as a more Catholic shindig, but have utter contempt for it because it’s just a huge piss up with a dress up flavour to it. Oddly enough, the same argument goes for the national holiday Queen’s Day and major football matches, but apparently some parties are more equal than others.

Coffin made of Legos

Filed under: Shows by Branko Collin @ 9:08 am

A Lego nut had told the Mooi! Weer de leeuw show that she wouldn’t mind being buried in a coffin made of Legos, and the show’s producers obliged her last night … by giving her such a coffin. To make things complete they gave a fellow Lego addict a Lego urn and a Lego cake for after the funeral.

No idea if this is for real or just looks like Lego. You can catch the show here (I hope). The Lego bit is near the end, just before the segment where a ten year old girl declares that she’d like a non-childish colouring book, and gets a book with pictures of the murder of Pim Fortuijn and Teletubby porn.

Dutch crime reporter De Vries wins Emmy

Peter R. de Vries

TV crime reporter Peter R. de Vries has won the international Emmy award for best current affairs programme for his investigation into the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005.

The show, screened on Dutch television in February, featured secret recordings of the main suspect, Dutch teenager Joran van der Sloot talking about how Holloway died and how he got a friend to dump her body at sea.

Almost half the Dutch population watched the programme. The show, or fragments from it, was also broadcast in the US.

De Vries accepted the award at a glittering ceremony in New York on Monday together with Natalee’s mother Beth. They dedicated it to the memory of the dead girl.

‘This is the prize of prizes,’ De Vries is reported as saying. ‘You only win this once.’

Spectacular theatre group Dogtroep to close shop

Filed under: Art,Shows by Branko Collin @ 11:20 am

Dogtroep = wild theatre, outdoors, stunts, “live locations”, pyrotechnics, using the scenery, spectacle, and none of these for much longer. Citing reduced subsidies, the life-blood of their expensive type of theatre, the “troupe” will give one more series of shows called To Be To Not To be, and then quit. Their last show runs from September 15 to October 5.

Says Curving Normality in a farewell review:

Combining abstract narrative with the outstanding locations of their performances, the absurd visual compositions and daring stunts made their performances unsurpassed. I’ve seen them flood a ships-dock with a million liters of water (yes, some in the audience had some seriously wet feet), paraglide inside theater Carré (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), but also perform more tender scenes using small light after sunset in their out-door locations.

As always, the location the Dogtroep selected for yesterday’s performance was closely tied to their narrative. Using the outdoor location provided by the remains of the old steel factory ‘Montan’, the actors literally dug to find the unknown history of this forlorn place. Will they, the Dogtroep, become such a place themselves, or is there another message to be seen in this? As they say for themselves, the basis for this performance “at the edge of existence” are the plans, personages, and dreams that emerge from the crater they dig themselves.

The Silent Disco is a hit abroad

Filed under: Dutch first,Gadgets,Music,Shows by Orangemaster @ 10:24 am
Silent disco

The Silent Disco from the Netherlands is slowly making its way around the world. It started as an attraction at the Dutch travelling theatre show called ‘de Parade’ and now it’s going to be featured in London for the very first time. On 10 September they’ll be another first: Silent Disco at a live concert. The Fun Lovin’ Criminals are going to play for people wearing wireless headphones – no speakers. The first 650 tickets are being given away via Facebook.
Also performing will be Dirty Pretty Things, Mystery Jets and Supergrass.

I went to the Amsterdam Parade once and watched the Silent Disco as it was on an open dance floor outside. It’s strange to see people dance, but not hear any music. It was definitely one of the most interesting attractions I’d had seen.

Dutch journalist’s French music compilation gets sequel

Filed under: Music,Shows by Orangemaster @ 9:27 am
Filles Fragiles 2

After finally convincing a Dutch record label to release his hand-picked French girls music compilation Filles Fragiles which did better than anybody expected, Dutch music journalist Guuz Hoogaerts aka Guuzbourg is currently working on volume 2 which will be out in October. To support the launch this time there will be shows in November at the Sugar Factory in Amsterdam and the Schouwburg in Leiden with top French acts Françoiz Breut, Vanessa Contenay-Quinones of Vanessa & the O’s and Paris’ Peppermoon. Peppermoon, featured on FF1, performed on the Dutch television programme ‘De Wereld Draait Door’ hosted by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk who was so impressed that he has now written the introduction to the liner notes of FF2. Hosting the evening will be famous Dutch writer Ronald Giphart who wrote the intro to the liner notes the first time around and whose neologism ‘zuchtmeisje’ (sighing female singer) made it into the Dutch dictionary.

Big orange disclaimer: I have been doing projects with Guuzbourg for close to four years now, we DJ together on occasion (shamless plug for our next appearance) and yeah, it’s French and very original.

Warm welcome for Olympic athletes in 1928 stadium

Filed under: Shows,Sports by Branko Collin @ 7:00 pm

The Olympic athletes arrived home today, and they were given a warm welcome at the 1928 Olympic stadium in Amsterdam. I live right around the corner, and decided to take my crummy old digital camera there. As luck would have it, the organizers had decided that the athletes would enter through the front gate, where there is ample opportunity for non-accredited press (i.e. l’il ole me) to climb onto flowerbeds and the pedestals of pompous statues.

Below you see Anky van Grunsven (gold, dressage) being interviewed by famous sports presenter Tom Egberts. It was very hard to get a photo of her not grinning like a maniac, but here she had to be serious for a moment. She was one of the first there, and being a gold medal winner had to wait until the end to enter the stadium, and she was all smiles all the time.

More below the fold…

Cannonball champ 2008 with eight metre splash

Filed under: Shows,Sports by Branko Collin @ 8:27 am

The national cannonball (“bommetje”) champion of this year is Freddy van der Pol who also won last year, according to De Pers (Dutch, video here). His splash at Zwembad Noord in Stadskanaal reached a height of 8.60 metres, not nearly enough to break the record of 12.4 metres. The status of the title is itself heavily contested as there is a competing championship that broke away from Zwembad Noord’s in 2001, organised by Sportfondsen. Their championship will be held September 5, and still has some wild cards to give away.
