Dead Duck Day is just around the corner

Filed under: Animals,Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 2:08 pm

Kees Moeliker, curator of the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam, was awarded an IgNobel back in 2003 — the tongue-in-cheek awards of Improbable Research — for writing about “The first case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard.”

On 5 June 1995 an adult male mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) collided with the glass façade of the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam and died. An other drake mallard raped the corpse almost continuously for 75 minutes. Then the author disturbed the scene and secured the dead duck. Dissection showed that the rape-victim indeed was of the male sex. It is concluded that the mallards were engaged in an ‘Attempted Rape Flight’ that resulted in the first described case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard.

This year Dead Duck Day will be celebrated on the lawn next to the new glass pavilion of the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam at 17:55 sharp, the actual time the duck lost his life on that historic day in 1995. The historic stuffed necro-duck will be at the event, owned by Moeliker himself. They’ll be a discussion about finding new ways to prevent birds from colliding with glass and more news about dead ducks.

Don’t miss out on the traditional six-course duck dinner at the Chinese restaurant around the corner afterwards.

And if you have room for dessert, enjoy this six-minute movie about the two colliding ducks.

Hi, I live on ‘Fart Street’

Filed under: General,Literature,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:11 pm

In the Rotterdam suburb Capelle aan den IJssel, a new neighbourhood was built in 2001 called Fascinatio, named after the children’s book ‘Fascinatio de wonderwind’ by Tom Manders. It prides itself on being a great place for kids to grow up in, go to school and play.

One of the street names is Flatusstraat, also from the book, which is a fancy way of saying ‘Fart Street’. Although the street has been around for a decade, it made the kids’ news a few days ago because grown ups would like to see it changed and journalist grown ups seemed to have run out of children’s stories.

There are actually worse names for streets in the Netherlands: Eendekotsweg (‘Duck Vomit Street’), Poepershoek (‘Shitters’ Corner’) and Windgat (‘Wind Hole’), to name a few.

‘Ban on fries around high schools until 2 pm’

Filed under: Food & Drink,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:13 pm
fries1

As if there weren’t enough weird bans and rules in Amsterdam, the Labour Party is seriously considering talking to snack bars and asking them not to sell fries to high school children. Some party member was shocked to find out that on a day to celebrate healthy foods at school, some school in the Nieuw West district was serving kebabs and Turkish pizzas, in other words, unhealthy food.

The Nieuw-West district has many children of ethnic origin that are overweight according to the telly. There is even a school in that district where 42% of the children are overweight, many of which eat junk food every day, and their parents thinks that’s fine.

Although Dutch children are also quite healthy compared to other European and North American countries, they drink too much soda and do not eat enough fruit. They are in the middle range in terms of exercise and sports.

And then I still love this picture about healthy eating with utter crap in the vending machine. Some adult doesn’t know right from wrong here either. The breakfast ginger cake the kid is eating in the picture has acrylamide in it, a cancer-causing agent that isn’t even mentioned on the packaging and eight different kinds of sugar.

To get back to the ban: banning won’t help, it will hurt business and annoy ordinary citizens.

Stop protecting uneducated people from themselves and educate them about food. Stop the nannyism already.

Lottery stops giving away bikes, man stops dumping bikes

Filed under: Bicycles,Weird by Orangemaster @ 12:06 pm

A year ago, a town won 2,000 bicycles from a national lottery that picks its winners based on their postal codes.

Bike shops were not happy, as they claimed they lost business. This year, the national lottery stopped giving away bikes for that exact reason: they kill local cycle shop business.

The lottery used to award 1,000 bikes to winners who lived in the same postcode area. But several cycle shop owners said this was wiping out their business – particularly if the prize fell in a small village.

In other weird bicycle-related news, a ‘mentally disturbed’ man from Friesland was caught dumping 60 stolen bikes in a canal. Onlookers fished out a dozen bikes out of the water, and the local police helped fish out the rest. The man is apparently getting professional help for his problem.

KPN discriminated with its ‘Dutch only’ discount

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 2:42 pm

KPN telecom recently had a ‘50% off for 100% Dutch’ advertising campaign that got some French people living in The Netherlands properly pissed off. The French popped into a KPN store to apply for the discount and were turned away for not being Dutch, which is discriminatory and illegal on a European scale.

And, like many Dutch companies and individuals do when they mess up, they call it a ‘misunderstanding’. KPN claims that the software for its ‘Hi’ mobile phone plan had been unfortunately programmed to accept only Dutch passport numbers for ID purposes and not resident permit numbers, which is commonplace. It is sad how the sales rep thought it was normal to turn someone of another nationality down for a discount. Actually it’s scary.

I have no reason to ever do business with KPN and I think they’ve just given me another reason to make sure that’s permanent.

Asparagus advert from Limburg is an ode to fellatio

Filed under: Food & Drink,Weird by Orangemaster @ 11:04 am

As my co-blogger Branko who comes from asparagus country himself put it, “I don’t think we can abstain from writing about this Limburg promo”. And when it comes to gobbling up asparagus, why go for a soft sell, right? Enough puns from me, watch the video.

And if you thought white asparagus looked like a small Caucasian male, you’ll enjoy this banana version parody. In fact, the people who made the advert could be going for a cheap viral, as you don’t need any words to get this message across.

Farmer threatens dog owners with ‘coldness’

Filed under: Animals,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:01 pm

An angry cattle farmer in Hengelo put up a sign on his property that reads: ‘No dogs in the meadow, or I will ice your dog.’ (‘Geen honden in de wei, anders maar ik uw hondje koud.’) In Dutch, the last part literally translates as ‘I will make your dog cold’, which usually means to kill or ice, but not everyone agrees that’s what the farmer means. He put the sign up because he doesn’t want dog poo making his cows sick, and chances are, he’s pretty fed up at this point.

You could make a dog cold by spraying it with water, the police told the neighbours who let their dogs out in the meadow and removed the sign, assuming their dogs would get shot. The cops told the neighbours they were the ones committing an illegal act by removing a sign on private property.

In true Dutch ‘let’s talk it out’ fashion, the cops will get the sign back from the neighbours or fine them, and they’ll probably have coffee and biscuits, the farmer will give them a speech about how he doesn’t want dogs on his property full stop and the neighbours will promise not to do so. Then, the dog owners will ignore him, saying they pay enough dog tax to do what they want, and the cops will be by again, and so on.

Someone should spray them all with water.

Man cannot stop laughing after an operation

Filed under: Health,Shows,Weird by Branko Collin @ 9:59 am

Writes the Daily Mail:

A Dutch man who underwent hip surgery two years ago has appeared in a TV interview claiming he has not been able to stop laughing ever since.

According to Huug Bosse’s wife, her husband now spends his days laughing at everyone and everything and it all started when he had a hip replaced under anaesthesia in 2010.

Bosse (70) used to be a greengrocer in Krommenie, halfway between Amsterdam and Alkmaar. He was known for his cheerful disposition, but according to his wife Nolda, it has gotten too much: “If you are trying to have a conversation, and all you get in return is laughter, it starts to get annoying.”

Hearing the national anthem will make him cry though.

The interview was shown in Man Bijt Hond, originally a Flemish programme of which this is the Dutch version. Dutch television, or rather Christian broadcaster NCRV, likes its eccentrics—Showroom (1977-1982) and De Stoel (1990-2004) focused exclusively on them.

Stephen Colbert explains what US presidential candidate really meant with his lies about the Netherlands

Filed under: Shows,Weird by Branko Collin @ 12:50 pm

We suggested last month that politician Rick Santorum may have broken the world record on bald faced lying in his weight class when he talked about the horrors of the Dutch health care system.

If anything Santorum’s statements left Dutch pundits flabbergasted. Yesterday US comedian Stephen Colbert came to the rescue of every confused Dutch person and explained why Santorum says just the darndest things. The part about the Netherlands starts at 2:58.

“Evidently Santorum’s comments about the Netherlands were yanked out of … his nether parts.”

Stephen Colbert is a comedian who pretends to be a right-wing blow-hard pundit styling himself on the likes of Bill O’Reilly.

Cops fine pregnant woman having a miscarriage

Filed under: General,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:00 am

A 21-year-old pregnant woman trying to avoid a little girl tripped out of a bus in Groningen and fell flat on her stomach. An ambulance was called to bring her to the hospital. She was in pain, and realised that she was losing her unborn child. The police showed up and asked her for ID, which she wasn’t carrying at the time, something that is required by law at all times. She gave her details to the police, but they decided to fine her for not having any ID. She yelled at the police in pain, waiting for the ambulance. “If I could have stood up, I would have kicked them”, the woman said.

The police didn’t even wait for the ambulance and left. The panic was probably even greater, since this was apparently her second miscarriage. The police didn’t confirm the story, saying they don’t check who they hand out fines to (huh?) and the woman has lawyered up.

I’m wondering if there’s any CCTV footage or witnesses to corroborate the story, and if this is true, my general opinion of the police is not getting any better.
