Intelligent, clickable LED displays

Filed under: General by Branko Collin @ 8:33 am

Gizmodo went to Philips’ research lab in Eindhoven and made a short clip about magnetic, intelligent, LED-based display tiles. Presumably to be used for large stage displays, these tiles can be attached to each other without screws or cables, forming one big screen together. Once a tile is connected to the rest of the “swarm,” it figures out by itself what its position and orientation are, and immediately starts displaying the “missing” part of the image.

Philips has already been making hotel rooms according to similar principles (plug ‘n’ play).

Bike your house around

Filed under: Bicycles,Design by Branko Collin @ 8:46 am

As any European can tell you, nothing says “Dutch” more than caravans … except bicycles. And so it was bound to happen that somebody would try and combine the two. That somebody was design agency Reggs’ Thijs Bouman, whose Fietscaravan reached the final round of design competition Het Beste Idee van Nederland last year. Two of these trailers can be connected to form a double bed. For something so small this looks mighty comfortable to me, although I could use some pockets for books and a reading light at the head end.

You can view this trailer and many, many modern bikes at the Designhuis exhibition Fiets, from June 22 to October 5 in Eindhoven. Via Trendhunter, which has also got photos of the bicycle roller coaster that anybody can try at the exhibition.

Two new e-book readers introduced

Filed under: Gadgets by Branko Collin @ 3:47 pm

Two Dutch companies have recently introduced new E Ink based e-book readers. Irex, the Philips spin-off from Eindhoven, already has a remarkable device in its Iliad. Bigger and better than any other e-reader on the market, it is also twice as expensive. For the 650 euro that the Iliad costs you get an A5 screen, 16 greyscales, and Wifi though, making it an ideal device for students and businesses. For comparison: all other e-book readers have a screen half that size (A6), which makes reading A4 illustrated PDFs rather cumbersome.

But Irex must have felt that it was scaring people away at the bottom end of its market, and has now introduced the Iliad Book Edition at the considerably lower price of 500 euro. For that you get an Iliad without the Wifi and without a fancy protection cover.

A complete new player on the market is the BeBook from Endless Ideas in Utrecht, which looks pretty much like the offerings of Sony and Cybook. The BeBook costs 330 euros.

Another Philips spin-off, Polymer Vision, hopes to launch its foldable e-book reader Readius later this year.

E-book readers are devices that display electronic text files, and E Ink is a reflective screen technology that looks like paper.

Play dough-like furniture by Maarten Baas

Filed under: Design by Branko Collin @ 2:37 pm

Eindhoven-based designer Maarten Baas presented prototypes for Chankley Bore, a line of furniture to be sold by UK firm Established and Sons. The photos in Dezeen Magazine show play dough-like lamps (?) and cupboards (?) with some mighty weird extensions.

Baas is a designer who uses actual clay to make furniture, and has a few other interesting projects in his portfolio.

Electrowetting displays coming up in 2008

Filed under: Gadgets,IT by Branko Collin @ 8:30 am

Philips spin-off Liquavista announced last week that it will start production of so-called electrowetting displays this year, having secured 8 million euro in investment money. Electrowetting is a member of a loosely knit family of energy efficient reflective display technologies. It works by manipulating layers of oil and water in a cell (pixel). Liquavista expects to produce small displays for use in mobile devices such as mobile phones and watches first. The Eindhoven-based company claims its ColorMatch FreeStyle platform will have more than twice the brightness of LCD displays.

Hay good looking, watcha got cooking?

This week, patrons of the restaurant De Witte Tafel in Eindhoven will be served their meals on a hay box cooker. The restaurant wants to show people how to save energy and so they pulled out the old-fashion hay box cooker.

In this box, covered in hay, food can be simmered and kept warm, saving on gas use. According to Mounir Toub, one of the chefs, the box of hay is great for cooking.

Being very curious orange at 24 oranges, here’s what I learned about the hay box cooker:

Haybox or retained heat cooking is simply cooking a liquid based food like a soup or stew in its own heat. During WWII, cooking oil was rationed for the war effort, and so this method became popular as a way to conserve cooking fuel. They used hay in a box because the air spaces in the hay trapped in heat and allowed the soup or stew to cook in its own heat. Hay, shredded news paper, rice hulls, cotton balls, corn husks, etc., will work as long as it is packed loosely and creats air spaces.

And then of course, there probably is a risk of fire, but the green point is definitely well-made.

Filed under: Sports,Weird by Orangemaster @ 1:06 pm

Dutch bidding site Marktplaats.nl just removed an advert selling Ronald Koeman, the coach of Dutch football team PSV. A fan put him up for sale or trade against a better trainer. People who responded quickly could get assistant trainers Jan Wouters and Tonny Bruins Slot thrown in for free. Two years ago, Ruud Gullit, former trainer of the Dutch football team Feyenoord, was placed on sale on eBay because of his poor performance.
