Smokers to get smell of cigarettes back in cafés

Filed under: Weird by Branko Collin @ 10:55 am

With the ban on smoking in cafés comes the inevitable stink of us non-smokers. We reek of sweat and of not knowing how to have a good time, just the way our Protestant government wants it. A company in Groningen wants to remedy the former. Rwin Showtechniek rents out a device that will spread any of an array of 150 scents across a room, including the smell of a good Havana, and of cigarettes. Shown here is the Multi-Scent 1, which can disperse one scent through a room, but Rwin Showtechniek claims to be able to spread multiple scents at once, which probably means they also bought a Multi-Scent 3 or 6.

Homeless person moved together with “his” building

Filed under: Architecture,Weird by Branko Collin @ 12:45 pm

Last week a silo being moved to its final destination on the Ciboga terrain in the city of Groningen had a curious passenger, Blik op Nieuws reports (Dutch). A homeless man who had made the empty building from 1910 his home refused to leave it for the transport. The movers then decided to leave the man where he was and transport the building with him in it. The silo was put in its old location, except that it now has a parking garage underneath.

English words no longer automatic trademarks

Filed under: Sports by Branko Collin @ 2:46 pm

Visitors to the Netherlands have noticed the phenomenon before, but now a judge has confirmed it: English has become common in the Netherlands. So common, that the use of an English word in a trademark no longer makes that trademark automatically unique. The owner of the “Runner Hardloopcentrum Groningen” trademark found this out last year when it tried to stop a competitor from trading under the name “Runnersworld” through the courts.

Having a trademark means that you are the only one allowed to use that word or phrase for selling your products or services. To avoind stifling commerce, words common to a certain trade cannot be trademarked. If you are a glass fitter, you cannot trademark the word “glass fitter,” because that would mean other glass fitters would infringe upon your trademark as soon as they described their commercial activities.

In 1993 the same parties stood in front of the same bench, and the judge then held that the two brand names were confusingly similar. But the Groningen court now finds that the Netherlands have changed. According to the judgement published by Book 9 (Dutch) “running” is a now a common enough word in the Netherlands to describe, er, running. The 1993 winner lost.

Pyromaniac tries to use Bob the Builder sock for arson

Filed under: Fashion,Weird by Branko Collin @ 12:00 pm

Have you seen this man?

A tiny village in Groningen called ‘t Zand has been plagued by a pyromaniac since August this year. Recently, the police revealed that the arsonist had used a Bob the Builder sock during a failed attempt: they believe the sock was placed in such a way that it should lead the fire to other inflammable material. The fire petered out before it could reach that otherwise unspecified material, according to daily Dagblad van het Noorden (Dutch). The police know that the sock was made in 1993, and sold in the Netherlands, but they would like you to contact them if you have any further information about the alleged sock.

Bacteria from Groningen into space

Filed under: Science by Orangemaster @ 12:21 pm

Today a big ol’ bunch of bacteria gets a tour of space. The Groningen company Bioclear is sending them into space in order to test a new type of biological air filter.

The bacteria is hitching a ride with the Russian Soyuz capsule (probably not this one) being launched from Kazakhstan. Within two days, the Soyuz will be coupled to the International Space Station (ISS) and will remain spinning around the earth until 23 October.

Of course, if you read Dutch, the comments related to this news story poking fun at other recent news in Groningen (HIV party, the slogan ‘nothing tops Groningen’, etc.) is a real gas. Feel free to ask us.

Dutch hiphop: the crying rappers

Filed under: Music by Branko Collin @ 3:35 pm

Whack or whacked?

The Geen Commentaar blog (No Comment) reviews (Dutch) Dutch hiphoppers De Huilende Rappers (The Crying Rappers); apparently their flows are ill, their beats are sick, and a doctor is nowhere to be found. With their nonsensical lyrics, and funny voices and accents they sound like a grown up (*cough*) version of another Dutch hiphop act, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. De Huilende Rappers are from Groningen in the “far” North, and mix the local language with Dutch. They publish their music at Myspace. So far I myself like Butje (‘tard) the best.

This week, the Madurodam, the famous Dutch miniature village in The Hague, got its very first homeless shelter, modelled after a nice one in Groningen. The opening of the miniature version was done by minister for Living and Integration, Ella Vogelaar.

It’s smack in the middle of town, you can’t miss it.

Groningen house owners to pee sitting down

Filed under: Architecture,Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:20 am

meerstad1.jpgin a hospital sounded like a good idea, but what about in people’s homes?

Residents of the upcoming Meerstad neighbourhood in Groningen, Groningen province will probably have to pee sitting down permanently so that their urine can be separated. Contrary to the hospital that wanted to avoid putting medication in the sewage system, the environmentally friendly pee seperating project initiators, Hunze en Aa’s want to use the urine to help grow maize and cabbage. The whole point is that Meerstad is to become a really green neighbourhood.

Orangemaster’s note: it’s interested how men and small children are at a disadvantage, but not women. Just a thought.

The Instituut voor Life Science & Technology of the Hanzehogeschool Groningen has made a staircase shaped like DNA. It has several colours and can be accessed from two sides, making it a unique object of functional bioart. There are various hidden messages in this DNA staircase. To unravel these mysteries, the Instituut voor Life Science & Technology has turned it into a contest for all students and employees of the Hanzehogeschool Groningen. The prize is an iPod nano.
