Schorem, a man’s man hair dresser in Rotterdam

Filed under: Fashion,General,Health by Branko Collin @ 12:06 pm

In its Bright Spot series, tech mag Bright reviews Rotterdam barbershop Schorem (‘scum’) which caters exclusively to men.

If you want, you can get a haircut and a shave there (55 euro all included) with old fashioned tools such as straight razors, and you can apparently have a beer while you wait. Only for men, because “every man has the right to a place where he can be a man”.

Last year Noël Schoolderman created a series of short documentaries about ‘old crafts’, and the first episode was about Schorem:

One of the barbers says in the video: “A man should only be touched by three other men in his lifetime: his doctor, his tailor and his barber. […] These days you can see a proliferation of Albert Heijns, Blokkers, Xenoses, all the big retail chains. I think people these days have a need for something unique, something with that special touch.”

Fast food chain upset at student delivery service

Filed under: Food & Drink,Online by Orangemaster @ 3:11 pm

Since the 1970s American junk food chain McDonald’s has been big in the Netherlands, so big it was the biggest restaurant chain second year in a row in 2011, and for all we know it still is.

Some smart students from Barendrecht near Rotterdam area have managed to piss off the Golden Arches by starting a delivery service. You can Twitter @MacDeliveryNL or e-mail McDeliveryNL@live.nl and some kid on a scooter will pick up a burger, fries and a shake for you. Nope, no idea what the extra cost is, I imagine it’s cheap. For the expats out there reading this, the Netherlands doesn’t have ‘drive thru’ service the way they do in North America, and we’re used to onlines services that delivery food from over 100 restaurants.

According to Twitter, the students are making headlines in the media this week. The junk food kings are upset at the students using the name ‘Mac’ and ‘Mc’, and I wonder what the rest of this story will be because it seems it just got started. Mac delivery could also get Apple computers upset, who knows. To be continued.

UPDATE: McDonalds still is No. 1 in the Netherlands.

Smart phone takes bullet, saves man’s life

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 11:48 am

The life of a man from Rotterdam was spared, as the iPhone in his left breast pocket took a wayward bullet, saving his life. Four more bullets were shot at the man, but missed.

The police are still looking for a suspect, and there’s 10,000 euro in it for information leading to an arrest.

The guy took his bullet ridden iPhone home. I can imagine him framing it and putting it on the mantle.

Crowd sourcing a bridge in Rotterdam

Filed under: Architecture by Branko Collin @ 12:53 pm

The Pop-up City writes:

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) and Rotterdam-based architecture firm ZUS have launched the project I Make Rotterdam, a spectacular temporary pedestrian bridge between the city’s Central and the North districts that will be financed through crowd-funding.

The bridge, which should be completed during the 5th International Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam this Spring, has to help pedestrians to get from Rotterdam’s Central Station to some of the biennale’s locations. But how long this new pedestrian bridge is going to be depends completely on the amount of money that crowd wants to spend on it.

A plank will set you back 30 euro, an element (5 planks) 150 euro, and a part (9 elements?) 1500 euro. The Pop-Up City has some good advice for the organizers: “translate the website to English in order to open up the project for foreign money. Isn’t this an International Architecture Biennale?” I would like to add that listing prices to consumers without including sales tax is punishable with a fine of the third category.

Roller derby scrimmage in Rotterdam

Filed under: Sports by Branko Collin @ 2:45 pm

Derby girls from all over the Netherlands and Belgium came together yesterday in Rotterdam for a scrimmage, an unofficial bout. Our very own Orangemaster was there to block for the white team, and I sat in the suicide seats and took pictures.

For those who do not know anything about the sport, here is a short, illustrated explanation. Two teams of five women race around a track, dressed both to impress and so you can tell them apart (in this case one white and one black team). The only men allowed on the track are the referees who dress in black and white stripes.

Rotterdam plans to give away free bikes from stash

Filed under: Bicycles by Orangemaster @ 12:53 pm

The city of Rotterdam is currently looking into the possibility of giving people whose bikes were stolen a new bike — well no, ‘another’ bike, one that was ‘towed away’. Illegally parked bikes (yes, if you park it in the wrong place because the racks are too full or whatever, the city takes them away) are to be re-used and given to people who had their bikes stolen.

The odd reason behind this move is to encourage bike use (do we really need to do that?) and help out the ‘victims’ of theft. Very nice spin, PR people. The goal is actually to do something with all the bikes not picked up by their owners taking up space in some Rotterdam city depot somewhere.

Don’t people whose bikes were stolen just grab, steal, borrow or use another one? How many stories have I heard about how time-consuming and complicated it is to find out where your bike was ‘impounded’, never mind having to pay like 50 euro to get it back? What if I had my bike stolen in, let’s say, Gouda, and I needed a new bike?

Shame on you media for buying into this ‘let’s make Rotterdam a less scary place to live in’ when it was crowned for the fifth time most dangerous Dutch city to live in. Your Dutch city really goes downhill when you actually need PR to encourage bike use in one of the most bike-friendly countries in the world.

The Giant of Rotterdam honoured in statue

Filed under: General,Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:47 pm

The life-size bronze statue of Rigardus Rijnhout, also known as ‘The Giant of Rotterdam’, was unveiled in Oude Westen, Rotterdam on June 6. The statue made by artist Herman Lamers also symbolises the growth of Rotterdam. We don’t have a pic (yet) and ironic that first you are made fun of, then get a statue to represent your city.

Born in Rotterdam in 1922 Rigardus Rijnhout died age 36 years in Leiden. The giant suffered both from acromegaly (a chronic metabolic disorder in which there is too much growth hormone) and pituitary tumor. He was 2,37 meters tall, weighed 230 kilos and his shoe size 62 (European size).

During his life time, Rigardus Rijnhout received a lot of attention and was often bullied because of his size. In this video you see him age 15, eating many sandwiches and the narrator saying that if Rijnhout raised his hand, he could reach the rooftop drain.

Dutch girl has her Facebook friends tattoed on her arm

A Dutch girl has had her 152 FB friends tattoed on her arm:

The ‘social tattoo’ was done by Tattoo Dex, Rotterdam and took two weeks. The comments on the Internet are mostly negative, which doesn’t surprise me, but then I know absolutely nothing about tattoos.

How to improve Rotterdam in 100 steps

Filed under: Architecture by Branko Collin @ 8:31 am

In 2010 the Rotterdam bureau for architecture, AIR, released a booklet called RTM100 that contained before and after photos of 100 possible improvements to Rotterdam’s public space. Sometimes comprehensive, like the filling of a disused canal shown here to create a park, sometimes small, and sometimes playful.

The ‘shops were created by Topotronic from Brussels and URA from Rotterdam. The booklet was distributed for free throughout Rotterdam in December.

Writes AIR:

Many places just scream out for a simple intervention. Turning a bench so it faces the sun. Moving a trash can so it is no longer in the middle of the sidewalk. A gate in an otherwise boring wall. A lick of paint on the grey concrete.

Via Holly Moors and AIR, where you’ll find more examples. Seeing as how this booklet was distributed for free I don’t see how you could order a copy, but maybe you could ask AIR.

Short Twilight Zone-like YouTube thriller by Jamel Aattache

Filed under: Film by Branko Collin @ 7:49 pm

A couple of days ago Dutch director Jamel Aattache uploaded his short thriller Buren (Neighbours, 2004, 10 minutes) to YouTube. It is about living in an increasingly egotistical society. Very Twilight Zone-like. The film is subtitled in English, takes place in Rotterdam, and stars Esmée de la Bretonière.
