Panorama Mesdag painting to be digitised

Filed under: Art,Technology by Orangemaster @ 1:18 pm

Panorama Mesdag, the largest cylindrical painting in Europe, located at the Panorama Mesdag museum in The Hague, is going to be digitised. It was painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, along with help from G.H. Breitner, T. de Bock and B.J. Blommers. It is apparently one of the world’s finest and largest surviving panoramas. The visitor’s platform is a dune, creating the illusion of being back at the nearby Scheveningen beach in 1880.

The panorama is 120 metres long and about 14 metres high, of which every brush stroke will be photographed. A total of 10,000 details of an exceptionally high resolution will be taken using a specially designed tripod.

The museum believes that this project, which will last for months, will provide countless possibilities for studies and restoration.

Anouk in New York: Jerusalem

Filed under: Music by Branko Collin @ 9:03 am

Here’s one to help you slide into the weekend with outward poise and heart aflutter. A girl from The Hague called Anouk shot this home video with two of her buddies while in what appears to be a hotel room in New York.

Tip ‘o the hat to Olaf for this find. Originally from Anouk’s website, but that one lacks all the Youtube niceties.

Stairs made from a castle’s floorwood

Filed under: Design by Branko Collin @ 10:41 am

Recycled furniture – furniture clearly made from recycled materials – got very popular in the Netherlands sometime in the 1990s when an artist found out that a regular cupboard made from new materials would easily net multiple times the price if made from recycled wood. Despite the over-saturation of this market I like this staircase made by Jan Korbes from the Hague by turning old floorboards of Schloss Wiesenburg (Wiesenburg Castle) in Germany into boxes.

18th edition of Puch moped tour

Filed under: General by Branko Collin @ 4:37 pm

Last Sunday the 18th edition was held of Kâhwe Klâhwe (The Hague dialect, lit. cold claws), the gasoline and pea soup fueled Puch tour through Scheveningen and The Hague. Haags Allerlei’s Gera Nieland was there to take photos. You can enjoy them all at Flickr.

Puch was a legendary moped brand and very popular in the Netherlands. This popularity could not prevent the closing down of the two-wheeler production line though. The company still produces four-wheelers.

Hague tower still singing

Filed under: Architecture,Weird by Orangemaster @ 10:38 am

After reporting about it back in July, Het Strijkijzer tower in The Hague is still whistling loudly and irritating the neighbourhood. The building corporation said it would be fixed when they finished the roof in September, but it sounds like they’re dead wrong.

I’m sorry, but however is responsible for this must be deaf and dumb.

Wind makes Hague tower sing

Filed under: Architecture,Weird by Orangemaster @ 5:56 pm
strijkijzer1.jpg

The highest flat tower in The Hague, South Holland, at 130 metres in height called “The Iron” (“Het Strijkijzer”) on the Rijswijkseplein is currently giving off a constant, high-pitched whistle that can be heard from far away, all day long. The ‘annoying’ whistling started when the building was fitted with a metal construction on the roof a few weeks ago. Apparently, this “crown” is not yet finished, and construction is delayed. The poor, soon to be tone-deaf people living in and around the building are supposed to keep their windows shut until this is solved. And the website says end of September…

Check out the video and sympathise.

Foiled toothpaste robbery

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:28 am
toothpaste11.jpg

Last Wednesday two thieves in The Hague made off with trays of toothpaste from a supermarket. One of them, an illegal Portugese (?) of 22, was arrested, while his friend managed to run way faster. The total value of the booty was 500 euro, according to the police.

A female employee saw the men around 3pm empty a tray of toothpaste into a bag and walk out of the store. The woman warned her colleagues when one of the thieves came back in. The man that was arrested confessed.

1) Illegal Portuguese? Aren’t we in the European Union??
2) Lame robbery – that’s why some toothpaste is cheaper on the outdoor markets
3) Can I make white teeth jokes?
